This is a freeform roleplay based very loosely on the Myst series of games from Cyan and the associated novels published by Hyperion. A freeform roleplay is basically collective storytelling with each player telling his or her character's part of the the story. If you have ever played any of the games in the Myst series of games or have read any of the Myst novels, you know who the D'ni are. For those who don't, I will go briefly into their history.
Many thousands of years ago there were a people called the Ronay. They lived on a world called Garternay, meaning root of the great tree. This referred to all the possible worlds that could exist - known as the tree of possibilities. Their God Yavo (also spelled Yahvo) gave them a gift. He gave them the ability to write books which took them physically to these other worlds - also called ages. When the Ronay realized their age was dying they split up into several groups - each going through different books into different ages. Most of the inhabitants of Garternay, relocated to a lush world called Terahnee. A much smaller group followed a man named Ri'neref. He was disturbed by what he saw as abuses of the power that the Art of Writing gave to his civilization. He wrote a book linking to Earth and led a small group to a new life in a subterrainien cavern he called D'ni. He was the first Grand Master of the Guild of Writers in D'ni, and their first King.
At this point this game diverges from the official history of the Ronay. The games and novels follow mostly the D'ni and briefly touch on the Terahnee. However, this game follows the decendants of an even smaller group than the D'ni. A little known writer among the Ronay whose name is lost to us and is known only as "Fahehts Ahvogahro" - the first "Great Father" - wrote a book linking to an island age. While the groups that went to Terahnee and D'ni thought they were starting over (Terahnee means new tree and D'ni means new start); Fahehts Ahvogahro feared that if they forgot the past they would repeat the same mistakes and doom their new society to destruction within 10,000 years. As a result he called the age T'sahn Rifoon - Always Remember. The people of this age still call temselves Ronay, but sometimes they also call themselves Rifoontahntee - those who remember.
